Good Men Get Lost At Sea, Twister Valley Records, Press Release
Good Men Get Lost at Sea is the new album from Douglas E Powell & the Rising Spirit. With his back turned against the restless swell of the Atlantic Ocean, towards the shelter of the steep wooded valleys of home, Powell finds a new sense of place as he explores those old fundamentals: Family, Yearning, Loss and Love.
Powell is an established name on the fiercely independent North Devon live scene and known for his distinctive voice and the quality of his original songs. Good Men Get Lost at Sea is Powell’s third album and his first with a band. The Rising Spirit have caught Powell’s introspection and guided his songs back towards the light. Jason Pratt on fiddle takes hold of the melody and soars away, Del Skinner on bass and Simon Partridge on drums keep him close enough to the ground to stay entwined with Powell’s insistent guitar. Influences are there: the warmth of David Crosby, the heart of Phil Ochs, but deeply rooted in the English earth of Richard Thompson, Kevin Ayres and Bill Fay.
Eight new songs have been crafted from moments of inspiration and spun through many hours spent together in the glow of the Twister Valley wood stove, and in front of discerning audiences around the South and West
Previous releases from Douglas E Powell: The Iron Coast in 2009 and The Still and West way back in 2005. Good Men Get Lost at Sea is honed from the same seam of English Slate: strong and ragged as the coast; smooth and warm as the hearth.
